Way back in the early 1990's I maintained a network of around 50 PC's at the head quarters of Carlton Communications in Hanover Square London.
Back then 386 PC's had only been around in offices for a year or so and my job was as a "do-it-all".
My first "professional" qualification was as a Novell Network Manager, having pawed over the manauls that came with Netware 386 NOS (Network Operating System) and built configured and maintained several PC Networks I passed with ease.
According to the manuals there were three formal job titles and hence three courses / certificates, in addition to Network Manager there is also Network Administrator and user support officier.
Whilst plugging cables together, loading drivers, helping with login problems and loading applications kept me busy it is mind numbing work.
The real "fun" or perhaps I should say satisfaction came from when I got a chance to be a database analyst / programmer.
Carlton Communications engaged in a number of activities including aquisitions, currency trading and like many kept an eye on the London and New York stock markets.
This is part of a series I'm putting together to give potential clients a feel for
some of the issues I tackal and how I tread the technologies to solutions
path.
This small series will also serve the purpose of giving "would be"
consultants a better feel for the range of business types and how their needs do
and do not differ.
