XML can simply be described as a text based system that stores information.
Such systems can take many forms, one of which is the document. Although the information is held as text, the actual text can represent (or be mapped)
to other types of data.
When sytems are sending or receiving information across the Web, the information exchanged can be a single, charactor word, a database record, documents, graphics and even complex software objects used by programmers; hence anything that can be described using text, can have any kind of informaation about it sent as text!
